Install Beam on your Mac and allow the screen, camera and microphone you want to capture.

Install Beam on macOS

  1. Download the DMG

Download the macOS DMG. The current packaged build targets Apple Silicon.

  2. Move Beam to Applications

Open the DMG and drag Beam.app into /Applications. Launch that installed copy, then eject the disk image.

If macOS blocks the app

Check that the download came from Beam’s official download page or GitHub releases. If macOS blocks an unidentified developer, try opening Beam once, then look for Open Anyway in System Settings → Privacy & Security.

For a trusted, complete download that still reports a quarantine-related opening error, quit Beam before running this command on the installed copy:

Remove quarantine from Beam only
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Beam.app"

Allow screen and device access

In System Settings → Privacy & Security, allow Beam under Screen & System Audio Recording, Microphone and Camera for the sources you use. The screen permission label can vary by macOS version. Reopen Beam if macOS requests it after a change.

Opening permission and capture permission are separate. If Beam opens but cannot record, check the relevant screen or device permission rather than repeating the quarantine command.

Choose the source and prepare the desktop

Select a display or window in Beam’s searchable chooser, or draw a Region. Set up the camera and teleprompter separately before starting.

Supported captures can hide desktop icons and the Dock. Beam remembers overlay sizes and positions. With Real cursor enabled, the pointer is recorded into the source video and the separate cursor overlay starts disabled.

Find your projects

The default content folder follows the system Videos location, normally Movies on macOS. Change Project location or Export folder in Settings → General. Use Projects → ⋯ → Explore to find an existing project; Instant’s automatic exports stay in that project’s exports folder.
